So if a young designer (no matter what discipline) asked me if they should take on a new client/project I would ask them some questions instead…
- Are you dealing with the primary stakeholder? The person who will end up approving your work? Does that person have passion for what they do? Do they get excited when they talk about it?
- Do they respect design? Do they see it as a strategic competency or do they merely think that design is decoration or a way of making things “pretty”?
- Is the project exciting? Does it allow you to learn new techniques? Expand your knowledge of a market? Work with people that are masters of their craft?
- Will you have creative freedom? Are you “partnering” with the client or are you an order-taker?
